STIPEND
A stipend is a payment to an individual that represents an allowance for cost of living during a period of time that the individual performs certain research, training, or other activity that is specifically covered in a grant (usually NIH).
To receive a stipend the Department MUST provide a memo that explains who is receiving the stipend, their address and social security number, the amount of the stipend and if being paid in installments the period to be paid, the grant that specifically allows for this stipend to be paid, and any other information that would assist us in determining whether the payment should be classified as a stipend.
If this memo is not provided then a stipend payment should not be made. If you feel uncertain as to whether the transaction is truly a stipend you can request a copy of the section of the grant that specifically refers to the payment of the stipend.
Also, if you have any questions concerning a transaction you can always consult with Accounts Payable.
Payments to people for doing things such as statistics, editing, research, etc. are not considered stipends and should either be paid using PUR01 or PUR02 depending on the circumstances.
Joke of the Month
A man went to the Police Station wishing to speak with the burglar who had broken into his house the night before.
"You'll get your chance in court," said the Desk Sergeant.
"No, no, no!" said the man. "I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I've been trying to do that for years!"
